Pepper Kuthiravalan ( also called Kuthiravally) is a traditional and old variety cultivated in olden times. It was mostly seed on Wayanad. It is one of the highly productive variety with long vines. The pepper vines of kuthiravalan are long that its is compared with the tail of horse, this is how it got the name Kuthiravalan meaning “horse tail”.
These plants are comparatively disease resistant and grows faster. These traditional variety was once commonly seen in the pepper cultivating areas of kerala.
A rare, native variety of black pepper known as ‘Kuthiravaali’—which was previously documented and believed to have become extinct—has been rediscovered in Mananthavady and Valadu near Kalpetta in Wayanad, Kerala. Found by botanist K.M. Biju during a field survey aimed at preserving indigenous crops, this unique subspecies is celebrated for its highly fast-growing, long vines resembling a horse’s tail (hence the name Kuthiravalan or Kuthiravaali). Unlike modern cultivars, this traditional variety possesses high immunity against climate change, notable disease resistance, and exceptionally high levels of piperine and oleoresin, making its rediscovery a significant milestone for agricultural preservation and high-yielding organic farming.
The Kuthiravali pepper is a highly resilient and productive variety of black pepper that has successfully migrated from the low ranges of Thodupuzha to the high-altitude regions of Idukki. It is distinguished by its rapid maturity, unique growth habit, and exceptional tolerance to various environmental conditions.
Key Performance Features
Early Maturity: This variety is known for its exceptionally fast turnaround, often beginning to flower and produce spikes within its first year of planting.
Ground-to-Top Fruiting: One of its most unique characteristics is that its fruit-bearing branches (kanni) begin at ground level. There is no need to prune the tops or lower the vines to encourage bottom growth; the vine naturally produces spikes along its entire length—even if it grows up to 15 or 20 feet.
High Yield Potential: In a well-maintained one-acre farm, an experienced farmer can realistically expect a yield of approximately 2,000 kg (2 tons) of pepper.
Excellent Recovery & Resilience: Kuthiravali is more disease-resistant than many traditional varieties like Karimunda. If the garden is affected by disease, this variety is easier to maintain and nurse back to health rather than being completely wiped out.
Physical Characteristics
Spike Quality: The spikes are long, typically measuring between 15 cm and 20 cm.
Berry Density: Each spike is densely packed, generally containing over 100 berries (with counts as high as 112 berries per spike observed).
Dry Weight (Unakkavashi): It offers a reliable dry weight conversion of approximately 35%.
Cultivation & Environment
Environmental Versatility: This variety thrives in shaded areas and is particularly well-suited for moist, marshy, or wetland conditions where other pepper varieties might struggle
Hardiness: The vine is extremely hardy; even if the support tree dies, the vine often survives and can be transitioned to a new support.
Planting Density: For optimal vine health and ease of maintenance, a spacing of 8 to 9 feet between plants is recommended.
Harvesting Efficiency
Kuthiravali is designed for labor efficiency. The spikes can be easily pulled off in clusters—often five or six at a time—making the harvest process much faster compared to varieties that require individual picking. To optimize labor costs, it is recommended to begin the harvest when approximately 20% of the berries have ripened to a red color.
