Handmade Terracotta Pathiri & Ottada Chatti
Experience the magic of traditional clay cooking with Pepperhub’s Signature Pathiri Chatti. Expertly hand-wheeled by local artisans, these shallow clay tawas are designed specifically for making soft, thin Rice Pathiris, crispy Ottadas, and flavorful Polas. Sourced from natural riverbed clay and traditionally fired, these tawas distribute heat evenly, ensuring your breads are cooked to perfection without the health risks of non-stick coatings.
Why Pepperhub Terracotta Chatti is a Must-Have:
-
Authentic Flavor & Texture: The porous nature of the clay absorbs excess moisture during cooking, resulting in Pathiris that stay soft and Ottadas with that signature traditional “earthy” aroma.
-
100% Natural & Chemical-Free: Absolutely no PFOA, PTFE, or toxic glazes. This is pure, lead-free earth that enhances the nutritional value of your food.
-
Superior Heat Retention: Clay retains heat much longer than metal, allowing you to cook on a low flame while keeping your breads warm for a longer duration after the stove is off.
-
Uniform Cooking: Prevents the “hot spots” common in metal pans, ensuring your Pathiri or Ada is evenly toasted from the center to the edge without burning.
-
Ergonomic Traditional Design: The flat-bottomed, shallow-rimmed design makes flipping and removing thin rice-based breads effortless.

How to Season Your Pathiri Chatti (The Traditional Way)
-
Initial Soak: Submerge the chatti in a basin of clean water for 24 hours.
-
Rice Water Treatment: After soaking, fill it with “Kanji Vellam” (rice starch water) and let it sit for another day. This fills the microscopic pores and strengthens the clay.
-
Oil Coating: Once dried, rub a small amount of coconut oil on the surface and heat it on a very low flame for 5 minutes.
-
Ready to Cook: Your chatti is now seasoned! Always start cooking on a low flame and gradually increase the heat to avoid thermal shock.
