Hailing from the verdant Malnad region of Karnataka, India, these arecanuts are celebrated for their distinct characteristics, as documented by the Areca Research Centre at Keladi Shivappa Nayaka University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences (UAS) in Shivamogga

  • Unmatched Flavor Profile: Savor a smooth, well-balanced taste with a subtle sweetness and a hint of earthiness, a quality acknowledged by experts during a recent analysis conducted by the UAS Areca Research Centre
  • Invigorating Aroma: Experience the refreshingly natural fragrance unique to the Tirthahalli variety, a characteristic that sets it apart from other betel nuts.
  • Ideal Texture: These arecanuts boast a firm yet slightly yielding texture, perfect for various chewing preferences.
  • High Grading Potential: Cultivated under ideal conditions, Tirthahalli arecanuts are known for consistently producing high-grade Nuli and Hasa nuts, fetching top prices in the market

The arecanut grown in the Tirthahalli region emerged as the best quality areca among the varieties grown in Karnataka in an analysis conducted by the Areca Research Centre at Keladi Shivappa Nayaka University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences in Shivamogga.

  • The Tirthahalli areca is highly sought-after for its suitability in producing high-grade nuts, with growers of this variety able to cultivate the coveted Nuli and Hasa grades.
  • The areca nut palm is the source of the popular chewing nut known as betel nut or Supari. India is both the largest producer and consumer of areca nut, with major cultivation in states like Karnataka, Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Meghalaya, and West Bengal.`

The areca grown in major parts of Tirthahalli, Hosanagar, Sagar, and some parts of Shivamogga taluks, the best was the Tirthahalli variety. Tirthahalli is a traditionally areca growing area. A majority of the growers are small growers, with two to five acres of plantation. The climate conditions also add value to the product. It will not be the same if it is taken out from the region and cultivated somewhere else.
